During the Edo period in Japan, there was a story of Ii Naotaka, the second Lord of Hikone Castle who was on his way home from a hunting trip when he happened to pass by the Gōtoku-ji Temple. He chanced upon a white cat at the temple's gate seemingly waving its paw and beckoning to him - so he decided to go inside for a rest. Unexpectedly, a heavy thunderstorm occurred, and Naotaka was fortunate enough to have taken shelter in the temple.
From that day on, the lucky white cat's reputation as a guardian deity spread far and wide, and was also believed to bring good fortune and wealth. The endearing appearance of the cute lucky cat waving its arm also made it a firm favourite amongst the people.
